A number of resume writing seminars, services, and online references advise individuals to focus on the details that catch the prospective employer’s attention. These so called vital details include educational background, awards and achievements both inside and outside school, licensure exams, and working experience.
Although the above mentioned details admittedly give positive first impression, a lot of meticulous employers give importance to the References section of a resume. Traditional sources recommend stating the generic phrase “Immediately available upon request” in the said section. However, because most employers are busy with their regular workload, they prioritize applicants having a list of references.
In resume writing, the applicant benefits from the reference list because he or she gives the signal to allow background checking. It is advisable to limit references into three persons only. Most sources do not encourage including family members as references for obvious reasons. Which persons should an individual include in his or her resume?
1. Academicians
It is important to note officials in your alma mater. Schools have permanent records of your grades, address, and conduct. Make sure that the persons you put in the list are still part of the academe. Some people include their professors while others prefer the College Secretary.
2. Previous Employers
Adding previous employers as references is crucial in resume writing. Many companies can actually detect a person’s capability and perseverance in the workplace. Through references, the companies you are applying for can determine if you had good relations with your boss or if you were fired because of misconduct or failed to surpass expectations.
3. Friends and Professional Acquaintances
Kinships can also be part of the resumes, as long as the persons listed are prepared to testify personal details. In resume writing, only put names of people you have known for at least a year.
