Sorry, I have not used any marketing company, so I can't offer any advice in that respect. My approach has been to leverage my own online presence and audience, as well as network of contacts, to spread word about the books I publish - along with tying in my books to relevant happenings (e.g. releasing an excerpt of a book to tie in with Halloween, which then got linked from multiple websites at that time of year due to its relevance).
Personally, I've never known anyone that raved about the results they got from a marketing company.
